The Kaikoura coastline is a Mecca for watching marine mammals and the home of "Whale Watch". Whale watching is an amazing adventure in Kaikoura. Fur seals lounge on rocks just metres from the shore, Dusky and Hectors dolphins frolic in the sea within sight of town, while only a few kilometres further out, giant Sperm whales haunt the depths. The Sperm whale can be seen all year round off Kaikoura and is the largest of the toothed whales. It is the third largest whale in the world, only beaten by the Blue and Fin whales.
SPERM WHALES(Physeter macrocephalus)
WEIGHT: MALE 36000kg FEMALE 20000kg
LENGTH: MALE average 10-15m FEMALE average 8-11m > 17m (max.)
The Whale Watch Reservations office can be found in the Kaikoura Railway Station building, Kaikoura. Please make the early reservation because normally you have to spend for few days to watch the whale due to the weather and the wave is permitted. And, just prepare for other activities in case of cancellation.

One of the best spots for Sperm Whales in Kaikoura Bay
The tail is the last thing you will see of this Sperm Whale for awhile as he heads towards the darkness of the deep waters off the Kaikoura Coast on the South Island of New Zealand. A Sperm Whale can dive to depths of 3,000 meters but an average dive is about 400 meters where he usually remains for thirty to forty-five minutes. Once a Sperm Whale surfaces he will remain there for about eight to ten minutes which gives you plenty of time to snap some photos. When the whale is ready to dive again, the head and body will disappear first and the massive tail will then slowly sink beneath the water's surface.

Lazy seals having their sun bathing all the time. You might have the chance to pet them or take photo with them on your lucky day.
Hanmer Springs is a popular tourist destination, and the population swells greatly during holidays. Visitors to the Hanmer Springs Thermal Reserve will be treated to a white welcome during winter. It is a wonderful time throwing snowballs, before plunging in to the pools to defrost. But, it was a wrong timing for my last visit because the next day of my visit was only started to snow.
$12 per single entry.
